Literary VIP dinner
In the framework of the Literary VIP Dinner, we offer our library users the opportunity to choose reading as a valuable and useful way to spend their free time and to thank them for using our library services by offering them a dinner. This dinner will also be with a person with a strong professional background in their field (art, science, literature, theatre) and who is therefore highly respected. The reader can ask the artist about the development of his work or current events in the public sphere in a relaxed and informal discussion.
Reading research shows that reading habits have changed significantly. It cannot be clearly stated, which is often said, that people are reading less. Fewer people read, but those who do read, read a lot. In addition, reading on the internet and browsing shorter articles is common at a peer level. The role of libraries in these changing circumstances is to promote reading, learning and cultural leisure, and to encourage the consumption of valuable content.
In the marketing campaign of the Literary VIP Dinner, the delicious food and the chance to meet and talk to a selected artist provide additional motivation beyond the original value and benefits of reading. Guests’ manners are of real value, so it is a real honor to sit at the table with them.

During the program, accompanied by live music, a good conversation took place between the guests while enjoying the delicious food. The Kossuth Prize-winning artist talked about the joyful but exhausting and difficult aspects of his life as a concert performer, the effects of his accident, and also told the story of how he and Kata met. Orsolya and István prepared a small gift to show their appreciation for the folk musician.
In January, the most borrowing library user will have dinner with János Bán, writer and deputy mayor of Kecskemét, while the most active and most reading library user in February will enjoy a meal at the Spaletta Restaurant and Beer House in the company of music historian Ádám Bősze.

On 26 February 2025, our second Literary VIP Dinner took place, where János Bán, writer and Vice Mayor of Culture of Kecskemét City, was invited as the guest of honour. The project, launched in December, gives our readers who borrow the most books each month the opportunity to spend an awesome evening with a well-known and respected personality, in addition to the pleasure of reading. In January, Katalin Csörszné Zelenák, the managing director of the Danube-Tisza Association of Village Guardians, borrowed the most books, and she and her colleague Edit attended the Literary VIP Dinner. During the conversation, Katalin and Edit talked about the activities of their 35-year-old association and the traditional village and farm life in the Great Plain. The author of the Hunyadi series was asked about his busy schedule and when he finds time for creative work. This is typically in the late evening and at weekends, but János also shared with the participants that he wrote a significant part of the second volume in Afghanistan, where he was working as a war correspondent at the time. During the evening, generational change was discussed, which can also be seen in the evolution of reading habits. Katalin is a lover of crime fiction, and Edit, in addition to her compulsory study of the law, mainly consumes contemporary Hungarian literature. Library director Dr. Erzsébet Bujdosóné Dr. Dani told us about the influence of Sándor Márai and recommended reading material for our guest, such as „The Sorel House” by Pál Salamon and „The Yellow Rain” by Julio Llamazares.
The reader who borrowed the most in February will have dinner with music historian Ádám Bősze in March.

On 13 March 2025, our third Literary VIP Dinner took place, where the VIP guest was Ádám Bősze, a regular performer in music history and registered reader of our library. Based on his loan in February, the sixth-grader Szilárd Bíró and his mother Ariella joined the music historian to enjoy the wonderful dishes of the Spaletta Restaurant. Even as strangers, Ádám and Szilárd found common ground easily. Szilárd loves reading and playing video games, and his favorite subject is physical education. He told us about his school experiences, his relationship with his twin brother, and the musical theatre performances he and his family have been attending recently. While preparing for dinner, Ariella borrowed Ádám’s latest book, the Musical Beasts, but the author suggested reading it slowly and listening to the musical quotes associated with them using the QR code. Ádám Bősze told us about his book in progress, the 18-chapter Mozart in a Bikini, and how he is looking forward to spending two weeks on the shores of Lake Balaton concentrating exclusively on this work. He recalled the tradition of New Year’s concerts in Vienna and even gave a behind-the-scenes insight into the events.
The reader who borrows the most in March will have the chance to have dinner with the actress Fruzsina Märcz, so it is worth continuing to borrow and read a lot. The Kecskemét audience can meet Ádám Bősze on Saturday 22 March 2025 at 5 p.m., when he will talk about the love life of Ferenc Liszt at the Katona József Library as part of the 40th Kecskemét Spring Festival.

On 23 April, our guests could again enjoy a good conversation at the Literary VIP Dinner at Spaletta Restaurant. Our March lending champion, Mrs. Sándorné Dunai, came this time with her daughter Anita. As they told us, they have been season ticket holders of the Katona József National Theatre for many years, and in the past, they have also been able to attend public rehearsals thanks to Uncle Vili Radó. Besides reading, the theatre world is also close to their hearts.
Julianna is particularly fond of romantic novels and prefers to read books by the German author Hedwig Courths-Mahler. Anita works professionally with children with special needs.
Our guests of honour, Fruzsina Märcz and her partner Levente Juhász, gave us a behind-the-scenes look at the rehearsal process. They highlighted the final rehearsal before the main rehearsal week, when the entire management team watches the performance and gives feedback to the director. Fruzsina, who likes to immerse herself in a good book or a puzzle, revealed that the intervals between performances are not conducive to these activities – she can’t get into the mood for either. Levente, who works as a composer, talked about the tasks he has to do and how he always asks his partner for his opinion when he is working on a new piece.
